Project Team: Dr. K.S. Kavi Kumar, Dr. Brinda Viswanathan, Dr. Zareena Begum, Mr.T.R.Prabhakaran.
Time Period: Started in June 2008
Sponsored by: Tamilnadu State Forest Department.
Objectives:
  • To assess current and future demand and supply of wood in Tamilnadu in an attempt to identify the supply-demand gap and suggest options for policy intervention.
  • To analyze changing structure of household fuel-mix in Tamilnadu and assess the role of fuel-wood in the household fuel-mix.

The study will develop a consistent database of wood demand and supply for the reference year 2007-08 through primary survey. Where necessary the study will make use of projections from the recent National Sample Survey (NSS) data – namely 61st Round (2004-05). Future projections will be attempted for short-term. For the second objective use will be made of existing sources of information including the fuel consumption reported in NSS quinquennial rounds 50 (1993-94), 55 (1999-2000) and 61 (2004-05). Further the information available from the NSS 54th round (1998) on common property resources will also be used where applicable.
